Treatment and rehabilitation
for drug-dependent people – Since 1978 MONAR has worked
actively to make drug-dependent people drug-free. Drug addicts are
offered counselling, individual and group therapy, detoxifi¬cation
and residential and outpatient care. Specialists assistance is
offered to the families of drug addicts and MONAR also runs programs
in prisons (in drug-free zones) thus facilitating a continuity of
care for participants of rehabili¬tation programs.
Drug prevention - Since 1981 MONAR has conducted a
number of prevention programs across Poland. The goal of the
prevention activities is the promotion of a life without drugs,
promoting healthy lifestyles and of creative personal growth. One of
the prevention activity is the “The Pure Hearts' Movement”, which
was initiated by Marek Kotanski, in 1995, and unites youth from all
over Poland. Commu¬nity prevention is also implemented through
community clubs, education and training as well as through social
campaigns.
Harm reduction - MONAR runs low-threshold
assistance programs for active drug addicts which are aimed at
improving their health and social conditions. Drug related harm is
also addressed and through this work we aim to counteract the spread
of HIV other infectious diseases and reduce crime. Since 1989 MONAR
counselling and contact centres in Poland have offered health
counselling, education, information and needle exchange.
Social re-adaptation programs - since 1993 MONAR
has organized regular assistance programs for the homeless, the
lonely, the terminally ill, ex-prisoners and other people who, due
to differ¬ent reasons, have found themselves living on the margins
of society. MONAR has estab¬lished centres called MARKOT (Movement
of Homelessness Prevention) consisting of night shelters and
residential centres. Here different programs for the socially
exclud¬ed are undertaken e.g. therapy for alcoholics,
post-penitentiary care, hospitals, health emer¬gency, hospice care
and a central unit for psychological and legal assistance and
interven¬tion. MONAR also offers assistance to people released from
custody.
